We love the fun, creative ways that list creators are using SkinnyScoop to showcase the things they know and love. After all, lists embedded into blog posts and sidebars are a great way to offer tips, share favorites and curate information without having to duplicate content or write the same thing twice.
Long Lists v. Short Lists:
We love long lists, and sometimes it’s easy to underestimate the power of the short list. It’s also easy to overlook the power of a long list that looks short! A list widget that features only one row can act like a slideshow, allowing your website visitors to scroll items one at a time at their leisure. We love the way that Kimberly of The Beehive blog did this to share her Queen Bee Picks of The Week.
So how do you do it?
- Visit one of your existing SkinnyScoop lists (or another list on SkinnyScoop.com that you love)
- On the left side, you’ll see buttons to share the list via Facebook, Twitter, e-mail and ‘Embed’. Click on ‘Embed’.
- A screen will pop-up and offer you options for list display. If you’d like a larger slideshow to live in the body of a blog post, opt for 500px (or specify a larger, custom-width) widget. If you’d like to create a small slideshow widget that will fit in your sidebar, choose a presentation that’s 300px or less.
- Widget Header:
Specify whether or not you’d like the widget header with the list title and creator’s name to appear by checking the box. If you’re using someone else’s list, it’s nice to leave the header as a way to give them credit for their work.
- Row Selection:
For the number of rows, select “1″. You will see a preview of your widget. In the image above, we’ve chosen to set the width of our widget at 300px, unchecked the header box and selected 1 row.
- Once you’re satisfied, copy the code from the box on the right. Paste this anywhere on your blog where you’d like your slideshow to appear.
There you have it!
(And yes – we did stick the header back onto our slideshow widget by checking the box. We wanted to make sure everyone knew that this awesome cupcake list was created by Celebrations.com.)
