Are you getting ready to plan your destination wedding? Here are my tips to help things go a little smoother on your big day!

  • Research vendors

Amanda says: "Research vendors online and read customer reviews about each of them"
    • Rachel: I agree! Reading reviews can often change my opinion on a service or product.
    • Krista: Reviews can make or break my decision. Especially useful with hotels.
  • Interview potentials

Amanda says: "Narrow your search down to 3-4 vendors for each category (photographer, florist, cake designer, etc.) and take meetings with all of them, bring a camera and take down notes so you remember how you felt about the meetings as they were happening."
  • Visit!

Amanda says: "Make at least one follow up visit to meet with all of the vendors you've hired. Also make sure to get a "showing" or walk-through of your flowers (centerpieces, bouquet, etc) and your table set ups at your venue. Take pictures of that, too!"
    • Krista: Taking pictures is a great reminder. This sounds like it can be very overwhelming, and I'm sure pictures are great to help remember little details.
  • Get it in writing!

Amanda says: "All of your correspondence and agreements with vendors should be in writing: anything you discuss after signing a contract should be incorporated into a revised contract and signed by both of you. Don't leave anything to a verbal understanding."
  • Up 'Do?

Amanda says: "Do a hair and make-up trail with a couple different people in the city and have them take pictures of the look you want. Another tip: bring that photo with you and have it on-hand the day of your wedding, just in case!"
    • Eden Godsoe: Doing a trial run through of your hair is a good tip for any bride. I did not follow this tip at mine and went w/ a style a little different from my normal (which is, mind you, a wet ponytail!) It was an up 'do and it just didn't feel right. It was definitely coming apart by mid wedding.
  • Who needs a wedding planner?!

Amanda says: "Hire a planner, not just for day-of coordination, but to help make recommendations and meet with vendors you can't be physically there to meet. Plus you can ship things over for your special day: favors, extra pair of shoes, special gifts!"
    • Jackie: My sister JUST had her destination wedding in Hawaii and the planner that she had was amazing! Very sweet and got everything done and handled the items that were shipped over to her.
  • Think of your guests

Amanda says: "Your guests have made the long trip to support you. Leave welcome baskets in their hotel rooms: include itineraries, munchies, bottles of water, and the ever-important toothbrush and toothpaste just in case they forgot to pack these items!"
    • Eden Godsoe: I so agree with this. It's your day but you need to think of the guests. In particular, think about their logistics. We had buses at our destination wedding to avoid drinking & driving or people scrambling for taxis.

  • myTab - honeymoon gift registry

heddi cundle suggests: "myTab.co is a stunning travel gift registry, and socially integrates so the happy couple can shout 'Put it on myTab for our honey gift registry' and this posts to their Facebook & Twitter account. Once all the funds accumulate, the couple can redeem this towards their honeymoon, all within myTab & socially thank wedding guests. Brilliant!"
  • Planning a Destination Wedding | List Producer

Relax: A wedding in the islands means a laid back atmosphere. When you’re planning be aware that not all of these vendors are on the same clock as you.

List Producer suggests: "Relaxing was very difficult for this Type-A New Yorker to grasp. I would panic, “I sent an email 15 minutes ago and still haven’t heard back!” Please – island time is island time. Learn to deal with it and you’ll be much happier."
