Mattie, Lydia, and Hannah work as nannies for three different upper-class families in a posh London neighborhood in 1902. A fascinating look at family life and class distinction, taking place just ten years before we met Downton's inhabitants.

The acclaimed memoir of Margaret Powell, who started out as a kitchen maid (like the naive Daisy) in 1920s England. This book is said to have inspired both Upstairs, Downstairs and Downton Abbey and might be the closest thing you'll get in book form.

This 1999 adaptation of the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell is set in the 1830s, predating Downton by some 80 years - but you'll encounter lords and ladies, tradesmen and social climbers in this romantic drama. You'll recognize a few Downton actors, too, including Penelope Wilton (Isobel) and Iain Glen (Carlisle). Streams instantly on Netflix.

Compared to Downton's beautiful scenery, the dark and dusty 1970s version of this classic BBC drama looks a little like they threw some old furniture onto the set of Dr. Who and called it good. But the class distinction, drama, and ultra-polite manners we love about Downton are all there. Streams from Amazon, free for Prime members.
