The vast majority of playgroups are formed or are active when the kiddies are very little - like from birth to maybe pre-preschool age. Its really more about the moms getting social time, meeting women w/ kids the same age, sharing information, getting out of the house, etc. At that age, kids (or really babies) don't really play w/ one another anyway. By the time your children go to preschool, they will start being friends w/ some kids more than other kids & you can schedule playdates w/ those kids. And you also end up being friends w/ many of those moms though not in formal playgroups.

The kids are too young to know the difference.

When babies are little I think more important that moms have common interests and enjoy one another. As children start getting older I think they need to match well with the other children too.

Especially when the kids are young. Before 3 or maybe even 4 kids barely play together. They may interact a bit, but I don't think the presence of other kids they like affects their good time.
