As a former competitive swimmer, I have enjoyed introducing my kids to the water. But it seemed to only go so far - they are comfortable in the water but I haven't gotten them to truly lean to swim. So we are starting in on formal swim lessons at a place where they take a "sink or swim" kind of approach, which I think is what my 5-yr now needs - some pushing.

La Petit Baleen is awesome if you are on the SF Peninsula - I would recommend them to anyone. The infant class is sometimes called "drown-proofing" which only sounds scary, the little ones have a great time. They teach water safety and water rescue to the older kids too.
