Word of mouth is probably the biggest source followed by select websites or groups I trust.

Our local newspaper does a good job (small town) of posting upcoming events. Also, my kids who are in school get lots of flyers sent home in backpack mail that keeps me up to date. My friends are also pretty connected so word of mouth is great. There's a new resource in my community (may already be in yours) called Macaroni Kid and they do a good job of pulling info together in one spot and is dedicated to kids activities. Check it out.
