Complete surprise - we hadn't discussed marriage yet & it was earlier than I expected

My husband even asked me for a deadline...said he worked better under pressure. So I set that as Valentine's Day (an easy day to remember.) Guess when I got the proposal? Yup...the evening of Valentine's Day. He asked me to go for a walk in the park. We never go for walks! It was very sweet in that we walked to the playground where we had first really met. 8 years of marriage later, I think I did the right thing re the ultimatum. Some guys (or ladies) just need 'em.

We had discussed marriage however when my then boyfriend went to ask my Dad for permission my Dad interpreted this as me already knowing and proceeded to congratulate us both and making plans little did he know I had no idea what was going on. It wasn't until we got in the car to leave my now "fiance" had to mention he wouldn't be picking up my ring until the following day.

I could not have been more surprised. We'd met and had been dating for 6-7 months, and were on vacation in China. He must have decided he was feeling extra super communicative, or maybe it was the totally awesome food we had every day, who knows? I was speechless, which for me is saying something.

Not so much an ultimatum but an expiration... I was simply quietly going to move out. On the night of the deadline (my 31st birthday), he surprised me in the park, in a dark overcoat that was meant to be incognito but I mistook for street person. The following day it was surprise after surprise for me as he flew out my parents and gathered 50 friends for dinner in the most elaborate proposal ever. I can't believe I was a week away from packing bags!

We hadn't really discussed marriage (even though we'd been dating 5 years, I was gunshy) but I had just moved across the country (back to my home state so it was a very mutual decision) to continue our relationship.

We had dated for 5+ years, broke up for a year, and had only been back together for 3 months when he surprised me. So it wasn't really earlier than I expected since we had discussed it before breaking up, but it was early in round two of the relationship.
