Dolly was born on January 19, 1946, as the fourth of twelve children of Robert Lee Parton Sr. and his wife Avie Lee Caroline. She was raised in Tennessee and was named Rebecca, after her great-great-grandmother, Rebecca (Dunn) Whitted who died in 1930.
Parton’s music career started when she was still a child. She was raised in a Christian home where she identified with her parent’s church choir, playing homemade guitar before her uncle bought her a real guitar. At that time, she was just eight years old. Parton has also appeared on local radio and television programs around East Tennessee. At the age of thirteen, she was already recording her song, Puppy Love. When she moved with her parents to Nashville after her high school education, she got a major push to further work on her singing career.
